Dubai is a city that glitters, on purpose.

Glass towers shimmer. Perfumes wrap around you like velvet. Promises live in every reflection.

And yet, that’s not where I found what I came for.

In Scent Trail – Episode 4: « The Gold Within », I wandered alone through this city of fire and illusion, not to be dazzled, but to be stripped bare. To find the kind of gold that doesn’t sparkle on the surface, but smolders underneath.

Oud, Dust, and the Desert’s Gaze

What moved me most in Dubai wasn’t the luxury. It was what lived just beneath it.

In the narrow souks, where oud clung to my skin, I found a different kind of wealth: raw, ancient, unpolished. I moved through the heat like a ghost, tasting dust and sweet spice, letting the city press its fingerprint into me. There’s something alive in Dubai’s contradictions: elegance and edge, desire and restraint.

And then, I rode alone into the desert.

No skyline. No noise. No past or future.

Just sky bleeding into sand. Just breath and fire.

That’s when it happened, on my final night.

A gaze. Fierce, magnetic, impossible to ignore.

And in that brief, soul-splitting moment, I lost the woman I had been.

And found something truer: the part of me that can’t be bought, can’t be broken, can’t be buried.

The gold within.

Dubai didn’t just move me emotionally, it reshaped how I think about fragrance and identity. That contrast between outer opulence and inner heat is something I now bring into my work at Artisane.

The deeper meaning of scent, the ritual, the story, the memory, is always there beneath the surface. Some of my most beloved candle blends now carry subtle notes of spice, smoke, or oud, inspired by that trip.

I also began leaning more boldly into contrast: pairing rich fragrance profiles with minimalist design. Allowing fire and elegance to sit in the same vessel.

Because beauty isn’t always soft.
Sometimes it’s sharp.
Sometimes it burns before it heals.
